Calculate the correct W-4 withholding to match your actual tax liability. Avoid a large year-end bill or unnecessary refund by dialing in the right federal withholding for your situation.
The W-4 form tells your employer how much federal income tax to withhold from each paycheck. The IRS redesigned the form in 2020, replacing allowances with a dollar-amount approach. If too little is withheld, you owe tax at filing and may face underpayment penalties. If too much is withheld, you get a refund but have been lending the government money interest-free. This calculator estimates your total annual federal tax liability based on your salary, filing status, dependents, and any other income or deductions, then divides by pay periods to find the correct per-paycheck withholding. It also shows how much extra withholding to add on line 4(c) of the W-4 if you have other income not subject to withholding.
