The United States uses a federal progressive income tax system with seven marginal brackets (10%, 12%, 22%, 24%, 32%, 35%, 37% for 2024). These are marginal rates, meaning only income within each bracket is taxed at that rate, not total income.
Most Americans also pay state income tax, which ranges from 0% (Alaska, Florida, Nevada, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington, Wyoming) to over 13% in California. This makes total effective tax rates highly location-dependent.
The federal standard deduction for 2024 is $14,600 (single) or $29,200 (married filing jointly), which most taxpayers claim instead of itemising. FICA taxes (6.2% Social Security up to $168,600 and 1.45% Medicare) are additional payroll obligations for employees, with self-employed individuals paying both sides (15.3% combined).
The US tax system is self-assessed: individuals file their own returns (Form 1040) by April 15. Unlike the UK's PAYE or India's TDS systems, US employers withhold estimated taxes but employees are responsible for the final calculation. Underpayment can result in penalties.
