India's investment environment underwent a significant shift with the Union Budget of July 2024, which revised capital gains taxation on equity instruments. Long-term capital gains (LTCG) on listed equity and equity mutual funds are now taxed at 12.5% on gains exceeding ₹1.25 lakh per financial year, up from the previous 10% above ₹1 lakh. Short-term capital gains (STCG) on the same assets are taxed at 20%, increased from 15%. These changes affect the post-tax return calculations for investors in direct equities, equity mutual funds, and ETFs.
The dominant retail investment vehicle in India is the Systematic Investment Plan (SIP), which allows investors to commit a fixed monthly amount, as low as ₹100 in some funds, into equity or debt mutual funds. Monthly SIP inflows crossed ₹21,000 crore in 2024 according to AMFI, reflecting the growing participation of retail investors. The Nifty 50 has delivered approximately 12% compounded annual returns historically over rolling 10-year periods based on NSE historical data, making equity mutual funds compelling for long-term wealth creation despite near-term volatility.
SEBI classifies equity mutual funds into categories such as large-cap, mid-cap, small-cap, flexi-cap, and sectoral/thematic funds, each with distinct risk-return profiles. Equity mutual fund AUM has surpassed ₹27 lakh crore, reflecting widespread retail participation. The interplay between fund category, SIP tenure, and tax treatment is central to building an optimal investment portfolio.
Capital gains on debt mutual funds held for any period are now taxed at slab rates (no separate LTCG/STCG distinction), following the 2023 Finance Act amendment. Indexation benefit for debt funds was removed, making PPF and tax-saving FDs comparatively more attractive for conservative investors. For equity investors, the ₹1.25L annual LTCG exemption means smaller SIP portfolios can be rebalanced with minimal tax impact. Always model post-tax returns when comparing instruments.
