Add or remove German VAT (Mehrwertsteuer/MwSt) at standard 19% or reduced 7% rate.
German VAT (Umsatzsteuer / Mehrwertsteuer) rates: - **Standard rate: 19%** — most goods and services - **Reduced rate: 7%** — food, books, newspapers, public transport, hotel stays - **Zero rate: 0%** — some intra-EU supplies and exports **Adding VAT:** Gross = Net × (1 + rate). Example: €1,000 + 19% MwSt = €1,190 gross. **Removing VAT:** Net = Gross ÷ (1 + rate). Example: €1,190 ÷ 1.19 = €1,000 net, €190 MwSt. German VAT registration (Umsatzsteuer-Identifikationsnummer) is required for businesses making taxable supplies in Germany.
Standard rate: 19% (most goods and services). Reduced rate: 7% (food, books, newspapers, public transport, accommodation, cultural events). Zero rate: exports and certain intra-EU supplies. The reduced rate was temporarily cut to 5% in 2020–21 due to COVID — it has since reverted to 7%.
For 19% VAT: Net = Gross ÷ 1.19, VAT = Gross × 19/119. For 7% VAT: Net = Gross ÷ 1.07, VAT = Gross × 7/107. Example: €595 gross at 19% → VAT = €595 × 19/119 = €95, Net = €500.
Businesses making taxable supplies in Germany must register for VAT (Umsatzsteuer). The small business exemption (Kleinunternehmerregelung) applies if annual turnover is below €22,000 in the prior year and expected to be below €50,000 in the current year — these businesses do not charge VAT.
