Superannuation is Australia's compulsory retirement savings system, unique among developed nations in its scale and mandatory employer contribution structure. The Superannuation Guarantee (SG) requires employers to contribute a percentage of an employee's ordinary time earnings into a complying super fund. The SG rate is 11.5% for the 2024/25 financial year, rising to 12% from 1 July 2025, having increased incrementally from 9.5% since 2021.
Contributions to super are taxed concessionally at 15% within the fund rather than at the individual's marginal income tax rate, making superannuation one of the most tax-effective long-term savings vehicles available to Australians. Concessional contributions, which include employer SG, salary sacrifice, and personal deductible contributions, are capped at $30,000 per year for 2024/25. Non-concessional contributions (post-tax, non-deductible) are capped at $120,000 per year, though the bring-forward rule allows up to $360,000 in a single year for those under 75.
Australia's super industry divides primarily between industry funds (member-owned, historically strong investment performance) and retail funds (commercially operated by banks and insurance companies). Self-Managed Super Funds (SMSFs) are a third option for those wanting direct control over investments, but require compliance obligations and are only cost-effective above approximately $200,000 in assets. The preservation age, the minimum age at which super can be accessed, is 60 for all individuals born after 30 June 1964, with super available in full once the preservation age is reached and the member has retired or reaches age 65.
Individuals earning above $250,000 pay an additional 15% tax on concessional contributions (Division 293 tax), bringing the effective tax rate on contributions to 30%. Unused concessional contribution cap space can be carried forward for up to five years (if the total super balance is under $500,000), allowing catch-up contributions in higher-income years. The government's Super Guarantee system is enforced by the ATO, which pursues employers who fail to pay SG on time through the SuperStream reporting network.
